The point of a literary conversation is that it is a conversation. Back and forth. Not merely accomplishment and influence but ongoing dialogue. Sometimes the nature of that talk is pretty subtle, so much so that we have to work pretty hard to see the signs and intuit what’s being said. At other times, there is no mistaking the intent, the complaint, the reply. It can be something like this, “I, too, sing America.” Now that’s how to throw down a marker. Nothing to it, just call out your national poet for leaving you out. Stake your claim for recognition as a spokesman for your people.
